We did it!

Not only did we surpass our fundraising goal for Secrets and Seawalls, but we created and performed the work in and among the ocean front buildings of Fort Tilden, The Rockaways.

It was an amazing day! The weather started off questionable, but turned into an utterly perfect day for dancing and watching dance on the beach.

Here are photos by Homer Frizzell in an album on Facebook
And, for you reader... a few choice shots of dance in unusual and inspiring spaces.
Hi loves,
We are in the midst of an exciting time for Secrets and Seawalls - I've set the goal to complete the work by mid-October - we are perfectly on schedule to make that happen.

Currently there are two things at work -
First, we need some support from those of you that love us... the dancers are in rehearsal with me every day for two weeks to make this happen so we can premiere the work in The Rockaways on October 25th --
would you consider supporting this amazing project with these incredible dancers?

And, second, as I work to complete this dance I find that I am going back to the basics of where this work appeared: Hurricane Sandy, questions of NYC's seawalls from 9/11, information, secrets and this long-adored Ranier Maria Rilke poem are all elements from which this amazing work is growing....
Enjoy!
Dear ones,
It has been a while -- in that time we've had two residencies at Adelphi - one to create the first act of Secrets and Seawalls, the second to add the production elements so the full vision can be understood.

Over all -- though many challenges happened along the way -- and truthfully, I thought I might be done with making dances and New York City and theaters and my patience for the pain of invention may have been seriously tested...... It all came out right in the end....

Because this happened:

And for some awful reason....seeing a vision brought to life by dancers and designers despite many odds...heals even my deepest sense of broken.
We did it. I couldn't be more proud of what we created. And this is only a draft.
Much love,
I'm excited, and a bit scared - the work has gone in a very different direction than I had originally thought - but, this...this too is perfectly fine and really exciting.
all, Secrets and Seawalls is an exploration of structure and vulnerability –

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">After
9/11, there was a murmur that NYC’s seawalls had been fractured.

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Teams
of architects and engineers were brought in as a task force to discover the
extent of damage.

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">As
a busy New Yorker, I never learned the outcome. And I didn’t really think about it again until Oct. 29th,
2012,

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">as
Hurricane Sandy, the full moon, and a Nor’Easter slammed the East coast all at
once, I thought of the walls – the possibility of fracture – and what keeps
this powerful city safe and our amazing subway system intact….

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">I
also thought of our human reality: We think we are quite powerful; We have all
of the structures in place…

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">But
once we lose electricity, NYC is just an island, and our homes at the beach are
constantly facing off with

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">something
so much more powerful than us….

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">So
where is power? Is it in the open, honest vulnerability? Or is it in the
mortar, the structures we build?

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Is
it about retaining our information or about releasing it so that others might
learn as well?

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">Thank you for joining this journey of

Over the past few years Kinesis Project has been getting known as a dance company that creates large and small scale, surprise experiences....
And now, that's we've had our first commercial experience - I have to say I LOVE being that dance company -- skilled at creating layered post-modern dance while constantly energized by the world outside -- the surprising places in both urban and natural settings, where dances can live ---

So, here is our first major commercial experience... Live and in person....

Kinesis Project partnered with Flavorpill and created a Pepsi commercial for the #gethypedforhalftime Superbowl campaign.
We created 3 pop-up halftimes in 3 cities over 3 days.
The first was NYC on Jan 20, 2014.
Remember Jan 20th? it was a Tuesday... it was a blizzard. Did we do it anyway? YOU BET we did.

Madeline, her acro partner Ben, Anjuli and Mia were dancing rockstars in the SNOW, and our Referee, Danny Moser was amazing at leading the Stonybrook Band right into and through the entire experience at Union Square and in the West Village..... Completely satisfying experience for all.
We created surprise, lots of joy and even had the magic of snowfall on our side....

Here it is:
Secrets and Seawalls So Far

Hello friendly KP world...

I've had to create some longer clips for applications in the past few days, and clearly, this is the perfect place to share what we have so far discovered in this new process.

The video below is from our first Open Studios for Secrets and Seawalls on May 20...

Generally, Open Studios occur after 6 rehearsals.

As you watch, remember the questions posed in rehearsal:
1. You have a secret
2. Where inside you does it live
3. How might it move through you
4. How/where on your body might it reveal itself
5. How would you reveal it to another person

FIRST OPEN STUDIO - this was a showing of the over arching ideas of the piece -
This is a 5 minute segment of SECRETS AND SEAWALLS, the work that is in process and will premier in May 2014.
This clip, spanning 3 sections of the dance, is taken from our May 20, 2013 Open Studio at Gibney Dance Center.
It begins mid-trio with Hilary Brown (dancing with eyes closed) Benjamin Oyzon and Jun Lee - later, adding in Zoe Bowick Levine dancing with Jun Lee.
A dancer enters the stage walking backwards, curving her spine head first into space, catching her balance, slowly snaking and articulating her whole body. She makes a captivating, curving, articulate cross in silhouette that evokes both power and vulnerability.

She leaves, and another dancer enters, inviting an audience member behind a curtain. They share a secret, and the audience member resumes their seat.
This is the beginning of Secrets and Seawalls, a work that follows individuals and their intrinsic community through moments of hope and of loss.

Through dances with closed eyes, playful duets of secret stealing, choreography invented on the spot from audience interaction, and trios of dancers in constant movement, Secrets and Seawalls explores our deepest vulnerabilities and how we share, or don’t share, the secrets we keep.

Did you think I had left you forever?
Not a chance.
I was napping, kind of.

Let's step into process again....for the first time in a while.

The question series to begin this process was:

Think of a secret.

Where does it live in you?

How does it move through you?

Where would it reveal itself?

and finally...

How would you reveal it to someone.

Here are some images from our Open Studio in which we worked through the movement that had been created over a few weeks from this beginning point.

....These are the beautiful people I get to work with to make dances:
Jun Lee, Benjamin Oyzon, Hilary Brown, Zoe Bowick Levine (and sometimes her son, Leo) missing in action is Madeline Hoak, but she'll be back in the mix soon.
It has been a while since I've sat down and written.
Since September, Kinesis Project has presented segments of Mapping Home in the parks of NYC as part of PARK DANCES in Battery Park's Bosque Gardens and Ft. Tryon's Cloisters Lawn.

They were beautiful, and thanks to Emil Baez, Homer Frizzell, Mike Trutt and my Dad, we have some incredible shots of the dancers on benches, rocks and in the fountains.

We've also landed squarely in the realm of Flash Mobs - Yes.
Kinesis Project now creates flash mob experiences. I'm really proud of what we've accomplished so far...
Madeline choreographed this gorgeous Times Sq. Proposal:

Jun has choreographed a 30th Birthday surprise in Central Park

and I tried my hand at a "mob" for a rehearsal dinner right after the storm!

Yes. The storm. A superstorm that ravaged beloved beaches in Long Island and in NJ. The hours and hours I spent with friend Pete staring out over the ocean during our "let's drive to the beach" years, pleased to be looking out at something so much larger than ourselves - relieved to know that our tiny decisions about college or midterms almost couldn't possibly matter in a world so much bigger than us.

The superstorm (called because it was a Category 1 Hurricane, a large Nor'Easter and the full moon) triangulated in NJ to create, as one would say, a Perfect Storm - leaving a perfect mess of demolished houses, torn up beaches and two new inlets between the ocean and Barnegat Bay -- there is much, much more - damage on Staten Island, The Rockaways, and up and down the Jersey Shore, but I don't have the room, or the heart to list it all here.

And I find myself thinking of secrets. The secrets we keep and are kept from us...and vulnerability. What it is to admit to it, and how it feels when it is caught, seen and exposed - even if only for a moment.
That is the answer to the question: Why place dances in parks?
That. And.
I can't seem to help it, I see beautiful spaces and wonder about the relationships of people and space, and movement and stillness......
Pressing Empty is admittedly Girl-Full. I am a girl. I admit it.
But I wanted men's voices present, I always have... so over time, Ben and I have worked with Nik, then James and now, the newest member of the Pressing Empty cast, Andrew Broaddus, to find a balance.

Here's a rough draft of the newest version of the men's conversation -- this happens after Ben and I have our final "fight".
we spent time with the talented and flexible Mollye Asher and Ed Barnes two weeks ago - filming segments of Mapping Home that had been borne out of our first Group Interviews.

Most of you know about Mapping Home (I'm playing with it looking like this "Mapping:HOME" thoughts?) our incredibly ambitious project of interviewing as many people from as many places/walks of life as possible about ideas of Home and creating work that is performed in sites that replicate/express/enhance those conversations...... We've interviewed 28 people so far: 30-somethings, retirees, grandparents, teenagers, nomadic artists.... more coming!!

Anyway - all of that to say - here's a little meta video enjoyment for you: we took video of Mollye and Ed actually filming our dances....
I went for a solid week with no voice. I sounded like a croaky frog. then I saw American Splendor (the film about Harvey Pekar with Paul Giamatti and a fabulous life/reality/real meta reference throughout - super smart film.) and realized.... it could be worse.

Maybe that was an experience with a few lessons involved.
Lesson #1. How to communicate without a voice - FAILED (I kept talking throughout...)
Lesson #2. How to make people listen - PASSED (I kept talking throughout)
Lesson #3. How to rest your voice - FAILED (I kept talking throughout)

Right.
LESSON #4. I don't learn very well - UM.

How does this connect to anything dance related? (the same as everything does...it's ALL connected)

I am currently in an 8 month long (hard) lesson about limitations and boundaries.

I want Kinesis Project and all that we do to succeed, as fully as we deserve to
(WE WILL SUCCEED.)
Our dances are incredibly well received - people love PRESSING EMPTY and MAPPING HOME is getting more and more exciting.....
Yet...
I have found myself in corner after funding corner clawing our way out, to find myself there again.

With funding structures the way they are currently, Kinesis Project is in a very similar row-boat with roughly most of the New York City small dance companies (that link goes to the report entitled "The State of New York City Dance")

Staying still for a moment, finding a Long-Term Solution may be the only way we will PASS this challenge.
HOWEVER....... there are seriously exciting things afoot!!!!

Ah, Art.

Whoa, New Blogger Interface feels so..... new.

HOME - take #798.
Walking into the first rehearsal back to MAPPING HOME last week felt a little nerve-wracking but easy - the beginnings of things are always a little funny that way...
First I worry I didn't bring all of the needed "supplies" to rehearsal (I didn't.)
Then I worry that the dancers will forget to come (they didn't.)
Once we are all there, listening to the current interview series (Group Interview #2) picking and choosing what moments we are each fascinated with and diving into work in our private corners --
After that.... it's all good and full of joy for me.

As an added plus, we very well may have invented the silliest performance game ever, thanks to Madeline being slightly run-down and preferring to hold a shape rather than move herself...

Between dancing and laughing ourselves to tears we definitly found the first steps of this newest segment for MAPPING HOME.

Tomorrow I'll edit together some videos of Life as it happened last week - till then, go Occupy something that matters to you and keep the faith that one good, honest smile toward someone can change the course of history.
Before our showing on Thursday night, we decided to run out and get in a short photo shoot.
There was dinner, class in the morning, poi to be spun (thanks to Ben) & yes, Neva went running almost every morning!
Enjoy -
This Blog in Pictures is for Sheila Callaghan... who likes the sound of dancers feet during performances ;)
