Country Admission

I have to admit something -
I had very negative thoughts about Country Music for most of my life.
Strange because I've loved the Dead, the Allman Brothers, Santana, Van Morrison and James Taylor for as long as I can remember choosing the radio station and freeing my mind from the Top 40 music limbo of suburban NJ (sometime during my Junior year at FTHS)

But my dad would listen to the country stations...and I mean COUNTRY....songs about shooting your wife because she walked the dog wrong and the jutebox doesn't work and someone left someone else.........

Maybe I wasn't mature enough to understand these things....

Maybe I'm still not.

But here is my confession - I Love Johnny Cash. Love him.
But the real confession is this (oh goodness)
I didn't realize I loved him until AFTER I saw Walk the Line with Joaquin Pheonix - maybe it helped to have Johnny so darn hot. I don't know...
But along with this strange new appreciation for country pain comes a long sought comprehension of my Dad's love for Willie Nelson

ok, time to go meet Shelia for dinner -Yay! Friend time....
more on my thoughts about country soon...
In the meantime I leave you with this urban thought
(from Jared...again...)

I grew up listening to Willy Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash too, simply because that was what my folks played. Of course they also love jazz, classical, and the Beatles. But I think my appreciation for country is starting to grow too. I'm really loving the appalachian inflections Cyndi Lauper has been adding to her music.

My parents listened to all of that stuff too - actually my dad jokes that the reason he has hearing problems now is because he spent hours with old school headphones on his ears listening to jazz (in the 50's that was rebelling!)

I kind of feel like I have Janis Joplin, Carly Simon, Helen Ready, Donna Summer and many many more in my blood just from them playing while I was busy playing with blocks!

I'm sure your Dad would like to hear you've turned the corner on Willie's Rose.
